Desert Divas workshops are on again in Alice Springs this month.
Desert Divas & Sista Sounds form the Territory’s premier music development program for female Indigenous musicians, rappers and singer-songwriters. Fostering the considerable and unique artistic talent of Indigenous women, the programs develop and support the work of Indigenous women in music, from the grass roots community programs of Sista Sounds through to the Desert Divas – a platform for women to showcase their music and talent.
Over the past six years, MusicNT's Indigenous women's music programs have grown and spread across the Northern Territory. We now deliver workshops and skills development programs through Sista Sounds to remote communities throughout Central Australia. The Divas program includes Saltwater Divas in Darwin, Barkly Divas in Tennant Creek, and Desert Divas in Alice Springs.
Eight Divas were selected from the past five years of Desert, Saltwater and Barkly Divas programs. They participated in a trailblazing program of mentoring and skills development, leading to one of their songs being professionally recorded with award-winning producer Anna Laverty, and included on ‘Desert Divas Volume 2’.
