Desert Divas Volume II launched!

Eight Indigenous women from across the Territory have been selected to participate in a groundbreaking program of music mentoring and skills development leading to one of their songs being professionally recorded with award-winning producer Anna Laverty and included on the ‘Desert Divas Volume II’ album.

In 2012, MusicNT launched Australia’s first Indigenous women's compilation album ‘Desert Divas Volume 1′. Featuring 10 tracks from artists in the Desert Divas program, the album showcased a kaleidoscope of genres, stories and language.

And in 2016 the second edition of the project will be released.

MusicNT Central Australian manager Adelaide Wood said the program will provide Territory artists a unique opportunity to develop their skills and get their music on a national platform. “Desert Divas Vol II is an exciting project for Indigenous women in the Territory. It’s stacked with skills and industry development and actively connects female singer/songwriters with some very inspiring mentors. We can't wait to see what they create and we’re look forward to helping these amazing artists, who are usually isolated with their musical endeavors, to share their stories, music and passion nationally.”

Mentors from the Australian music industry will fly to Alice Springs in February/March to support the musicians in the Desert Divas Volume II project. MusicNT is thrilled to announce the mentors include:

  • Dallas Frasca (musician and lead singer of Dallas Frasca)
  • Ursula Yovich (actress and singer, Sapphires)
  • Nai Palm (front woman of Hiatus Koyote)
  • Leah Flanagan (APRA award winning musician)
  • Anna Laverty (award-winning producer, worked with Nick Cave, Cut Copy and Paul Dempsey)
  • Stephanie Harrison (one half of Alice Springs band Bat Hazzard).
